BEYOND WORDS
October 3-5, 2008

Steamboat Springs Arts & Crafts Gym
Steamboat Springs,Colorado

BEYOND WORDS explores the integration of art and writing.  This structured and facilitated workshop provides you with intensive personal experience in the practice of journal keeping. The workshop helps an uninitiated writer/artist get started while providing the experienced writer/artist with a new modality for creative expression.

Experimenting with color, shape and form, you will create a variety of visual journal pages as an expression of daily experience. Using a combination of canvas art boards and traditional bookbinding tools, fashion a one-of-a-kind art journal with blank and hand painted pages ready to receive.

Imperfection is acceptable, even celebrated, as you incorporate recycled and torn materials in your art work. No more fear of the blank page—no more worry about wasting paper. Creative impulses are bolstered through the use of collage:  no more agonizing about lack of drawing skills or talent.
BEYOND WORDS gives permission for self-expression without the need for formal language, grammar or syntax. Image selection is guided by emotion. Page preparation is a function of experimentation; there is no right or wrong way to create a visual journal.

The BEYOND WORDS workshop is highly interactive with many opportunities to share and discuss the writing and art-making process.  A format of 1/3 discussion and 2/3 writing/art practice combines immediate satisfaction in the ability to write and make art with real-time learning about a wide variety of techniques for journal keeping.

Learn how to bring art into your daily life ’Äìeven (or especially!) if you are not an artist. No experience necessary.

Journal to the Self® - Journal Writing Intensive
September 19-21, 2008
Steamboat Springs, CO

Tips and Techniques for a Satisfying Journal Practice
The widespread use of the diary as a tool for personal growth and for realizing creative potential is a phenomenon of the twentieth century. Reflective writing is a simple way to gain access to the creative self and develop one's ability to articulate a unique identity. The diary is the only form of writing that encourages complete self-expression. There are no rules yet many people are afraid to engage in the writing process. Recent research has proved that writing for as few as fifteen minutes a day over a four day period can substantially increase human immune system functioning.

Certified Journal Facilitator and Life Coach Susan de Wardt shows you how to use a journal for personal growth, creative expression and career enhancement. In this Journal to the Self® workshop designed and developed by Kathleen Adams and based on her book of the same name, you will experience 16 different journal techniques that will add color, perspective and dimension to your reflective writing. Discover the writer within as you gently but powerfully explore the various aspects of yourself, your life and your relationship with others.

SOUL MATES-- Spiritual autobiography through doll making
Tuesday July 29, 2008,  6:00-9:00pm
Steamboat Springs, CO

Evidence of doll-making dates from the dawn of civilization as communities of people used an array of natural materials to fashion lifelike images as representations of deities. As civilizations evolved, these lifelike images became playthings. The doll may, indeed, be a candidate for the world's oldest known toy. Today artists are creating unique dolls as representations of human character that exist beyond medium and subject. These Art Dolls have something more import than form—they have Soul. Imbued with vitality, intention, and strength of purpose, Soul dolls provide a spiritual connection for those who create them.

Writer/Artist and Life Coach Susan de Wardt shows you how to blend inner spirit with life experience to create a one-of-a-kind Art Doll as a companion for life's journey. Taking cues from poetry and individual history, participants will discover and interpret personal strengths and meaning through the medium of soft sculpture. Workshop includes facilitation for discovery of an authentic spirit and direction in the basics of doll construction and embellishment.

Previous sewing experience not necessary. Basic materials furnished. Bring specialty items if desired: fabric, ribbons, ephemera, personal memorabilia.

Fees:  $65
Class size limited to 10 people.
